The latest Garmin firmware update is now available through your Garmin Connect software. Normally we would not even notice the news, but this update includes some cool new features, not just patches to software glitches.
For Garmin’s Edge 1000, the update activates the little buttons hidden on top of the Dura Ace 9070 shifter bodies, found just beneath the hoods. These buttons have been there the whole time, and have been useless until now. Remember Shimano’s Flight Deck computer from the early 2000’s? Same idea here, but these buttons will control your Garmin! I have yet to
The Edge 810 and 510 had been running beta software, granting access to battery and drivetrain information from Shimano’s D-Fly unit (Shimano part #SM-EWW01). You had to manually load this software and that had proven to be frustrating to some. Now that Garmin has worked out the kinks through beta testing, you can confidently update your 810/510 to have access to the Di2 sensor to pull up battery level and gear selection info. Pretty cool features for your Ultegra 6870/Dura Ace9070 electronic drivetrain!
Garmin’s Press Release
Like the Edge 1000, the Edge 810 / 510 now integrate with Shimano Di2 electronic shifting systems to display your current gear on the screen. We’ve also expanded the integration capabilities for those Edge users using compatible Shimano Dura Ace Di2 systems, by allowing them to directly control their Edge from the small buttons inside the brake hoods. These will work in the same way as the Edge Remote.
